Chartered Financial Practitioner – the Symbol of Expertise in Insurance and Financial Planning
Chartered Financial Practitioner is a professional designation commonly adopted by all the eleven members of the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association (APFinSA) and the seventeen members and affiliates of the European Financial Planning Association (EFPA).
The current APFinSA members are: Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
Presently, the EFPA members and affiliates are: Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, and United Kingdom
First launched in Malaysia in 1996 and further strengthened by the endorsement
of APFinSA in 2000, the Chartered Financial Practitioner professional designation has been well received in Singapore and Malaysia.
“Chartered” denotes the highest level of professional competency required
of financial planners and advisors recognized by the APFinSA and the EFPA
fraternities. “Financial Practitioner” labels those financial planners and
advisors whose knowledge, skills and standard of practice have reached the
level of professionalism comparable to those of other proven professionals
in the finance industry.

Objective: |
The module provides students with general knowledge and basic concepts on investment, focusing on equities and fixed income securities investments. It informs students of the necessary foundation skills for securities analysis. Offering an overview on the financial accounting concepts, the module is designed to enable students to apply basic analytical tools in the interpretation of financial statements. |

Fee
- Programme fee for each module: HK$3,300 (study materials not included - please see “Note” below)
- Examination fee for each module: HK$500
Note: Students must pay for the study materials at the time of enrollments. Otherwise, their applications for examination will not be accepted.
Entry Requirement
Persons who meet the following Entry Requirements are eligible to apply for admission to the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme:
(i) Having attained the age of 18 and completed Form 5; or
(ii) Having attained the age of 21 with 3 years of relevant work experience.
Examination
Examination Dates
Examinations are held three times in a year, in April, August and
December. LUAHK members who have completed the Chartered Financial
Practitioner programme are eligible to apply for enrollment
in the examination. Candidates may apply for enrollment in an examination
starting one month before the examination date. Applications are closed
two weeks prior to the examination date. Upon acceptance of an application,
no cancellation, re-arrangement or refund in respect of a scheduled examination
is entertained. A notice of examination is emailed to each candidate five
days prior to the examination date.
Examination
The examination paper for each module consists of 75 Multiple
Choice questions in both Chinese and English versions. Candidates are required
to answer all questions. The examination must be completed in two and a
half hours. No calculation formula is disclosed in any examination paper.
Candidates are not allowed to take any examination paper or answer sheet
out of the examination centre.
Qualification Requirements
Practitioners must meet all of the following requirements to be qualified
for the Fellow of Chartered Financial Practitioner (FChFP) professional designation:
(i) Education : | an attendance record of 70% or higher and an average grade (the average of the Final Examination score and the grade of the Action Project) of at least 70% in the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme |
(ii) Examination : | a Final Examination score of 70% or higher in the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme |
(iii) Experience | minimum three years of full-time qualified work experience |
(iv) Ethics : | signing a statement agreeing to be bound by the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility |
(v) Membership | maintenance of a valid membership of The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong |
(vi) Conferment : | payment of all fees for the conferment of the Fellow of Chartered Financial Practitioner (FChFP) professional designation |
Graduates of the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme are not allowed to print the title of “FChFP” on their name cards prior to their registrations with the APFinSA.
Exemptions
Candidates who have completed similar coursework in other study programmes, or possess academic or professional qualifications through completion of courses equivalent to those covered by the Chartered Financial Practitioner curriculum, may apply to the LUAHK for exemption from some or all of the required modules in the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme. Other qualifications or credentials are considered for exemption on a case-by-case basis.
Approved Subjects for Exemption:

The Exemption Fee for each module is HK$400 that is non-refundable regardless of the result of the exemption application. To apply for exemptions, an applicant should complete an application form, and send it together with the fee payment and the certificate copies to the LUAHK office for approval. A result notice is mailed to the applicant one month after receipt of the application. For a successfully exempted module, a student is not required to study the module or sit for the examination.
Accredited CPD learning
The Chartered Financial Practitioner programme has been accredited under the IIQAS for the purpose of CPD compliance. Successful completion of any one module of the programme in any year satisfies the CPD requirement for the corresponding year.
Moving Forward with Continuing Educationn
Completers of the Chartered Financial Practitioner programme, with the successful top-up of two subjects organized by the Hong Kong College of Technology, namely “The Principles of Economics” and “Business Calculations“, are eligible for entry into Jinan University’s Bachelor of Finance or Bachelor of Finance (Insurance) programmes.
The FChFP professional designation has also been accredited as an entry qualification by the University of Wales.. Holders of the designation are eligible for admission to Wales’s 2-year MBA programme.
In addition, Fellows are welcome to apply for enrollment in the 7-month “Executive Diploma in China Business Administration” (EDCBA) programme offered by the Management Development Centre of the Vocational Training Council. Programme graduates are deemed to have met the admission requirement of the 13-month EMBA programme offered by the School of Business Administration of South China University of Technology (SCUT) and granted exemptions for totally 12 credits.
All these pathways are for Fellows to escalate to new heights.
