Since 1982, the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) has remained the most extensive education available for professionals seeking a designation in financial planning. More than 41,000 individuals in the world have attained this distinction, enabling them to effectively apply a comprehensive financial planning process to their clients’ needs. The ChFC® program includes all of the courses in the CFP® Certification Curriculum, and builds on that knowledge with advanced coverage of estate, retirement, or financial planning applications.

The Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) is widely recognized as the highest level of studies in the life insurance profession. Since 1927, more than 94,000 individuals have earned this distinction, enabling them to present a wider range of solutions for the life insurance needs of individuals, business owners and professionals, including income replacement, asset planning, and wealth transfer.

The ChFC® and CLU® designations are conferred only upon those individuals who meet or exceed the qualification standards determined by the joint sponsors of the designations – The American College and The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong. A 2003 American College survey of students and designees indicates that CLU® and ChFC® designation holders in the US earn 34% more than their peers and those who have earned both designations earn 40% more.

Admission

Persons who meet the following Entry Requirements are eligible to apply for admission to the programmes:

  1. completed Form 5 or above; or
  2. Mature applicants aged 25 or above may be considered.

Qualification for the Designations

Practitioners must meet all of the following requirements to be qualified for the ChFC® or CLU® designation:

  1. Examination: An examination score of 70% or higher for each course Except theories would still be examined, all exam questions should be localized. *Re-examination is available for any student who is absent from or has failed the regular exam session.
  2. Experience: Three years of full-time experience in financial services industry is required for the ChFC® or CLU® designation. The three-year period must be within the five years preceding the date of the award. An undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited educational institute qualifies as one year of business experience.
  3. Membership: Maintenance of a valid membership of The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong
  4. Code of Ethics: All ChFCs and CLUs should pledge themselves to the Professional Pledge of the American College and The Life Underwriters Association of Hong Kong.
  5. Conferment: Pay all fees required for the conferment of the ChFC® and CLU® to be organized by LUAHK

Candidates who have completed the ChFC® or CLU® programme are not allowed to print the title of the designation on their name cards prior to their registrations with The American College through LUAHK.

Transfer of Credit

Candidates who have completed similar coursework in other study programmes, or possess academic or professional qualifications through completion of courses equivalent to those covered by the ChFC® or CLU® curriculum, may apply for transfer of credit on subject-to-subject base. Regardless of the number of the ChFC® or CLU® programmes into which courses can be transferred, the total maximum number of courses that can be transferred is 3, except for CFPCM certificants and FChFP holders, who may transfer up to 6 courses.

Other qualifications or credentials are considered for exemption on a case-by-case basis.

Accredited CPD Learning

The ChFC® and CLU® programmes have been accredited under the IIQAS for the purpose of CPD compliance. Successful completion of any one course of the programmes in any year satisfies the IA CPD requirement for the corresponding year.
